Airport Description

Description: Mexican Mountain's runway is oriented west/east alongside the San Rafael River inside the Mexican Mountain Wilderness Study Area. Due to the sensitive nature of the location, pilots are requested to adhere to the UBCP's Code of Conduct to help us maintain our strong working agreements with the BLM.

Runway: 1900 ft long x 40 ft wide dirt runway in good condition. Slopes uphill slightly to the west. First 500' from the east is soft and has a "dark spot" that appears wet throughout the year.

Approach Considerations: Tall trees (30+ ft) on both sides of the runway present a hazard when landing to the east (downhill). Typically land to the west and depart to the east.

Amenities: Campgrounds and fire rings (please use already established camping\/parking areas and fire rings).

Windsock: Yes, located east of the runway.

Beautiful, dry, so green and so many flowers. The river is running strong. The gnats are plentiful too. Try not to breath too many ?

The airstrip is in great shape and is dry. The normal two soft spots are near the old east end prior to where it was extended in 2013. The parking areas are a little soft and could be an issue with someone with smaller tires. The wild flowers are in full bloom with all the rain we’ve had. I’ve never seen so many at MM!

Tent Caterpillars quite the nuisance...they are killing a majority of the cottonwoods in the airstrip vicinity. If camping a tent is a must and keep it zipped up tight!

Landing surface East of the windsock has the previously mentioned cattle and mule tracks, although this portion is still very much useable with 8.50 tires. The rest of the runway is in excellent condition. The West camp is currently overrun with what we believe to be Western Tent Caterpillars (moth larvae). The East camp is caterpillar-free, but more exposed (no trees=no caterpillars=no shade). The entire area this year is infested with moth larvae. Very interesting to see.

Some Cow Tracks down the length of runway, but not bad. Runway was dry, camp areas were dry, windsock was in good condition.
