UBCP Smiley Creek Fly-In 2026
Join the Utah Back Country Pilots for our annual Smiley Creek Fly-In in the heart of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains.
Located at the iconic Smiley Creek Airstrip (U87), this fly-in is one of the premier summer gatherings for backcountry pilots in the West. Surrounded by towering mountain peaks, alpine lakes, and endless Idaho backcountry destinations, Smiley Creek serves as the perfect basecamp for a weekend of flying, camping, community, and adventure.
Pilots can camp next to their aircraft on the beautiful grass campground, enjoy hot showers and on-site amenities, or stay just across the road at Smiley Creek Lodge. Whether you are looking to relax around the campfire, explore nearby backcountry strips, fish, hike, or simply spend time with fellow aviators, this event is all about experiencing the best of Idaho backcountry flying.
This year we are returning to our roots with a community potluck dinner Saturday night. Bring something to share and join fellow pilots and families for an evening of good food, stories, and backcountry camaraderie around camp. Whether it is homemade Dutch oven cooking, snacks, desserts, meats, pastas, or simple camp food, everyone is encouraged to contribute. If all you have is a bag of chips, you're still welcome! However, we don't want to end up with a dinner of chips so try to be creative. (Optional for the drinkers: bring your favorite local brew to share). Bring your own plates and utensils and drinks if not bringing beer. Any leftovers are yours to have!
The 4,900 foot turf runway sits at 7,206 feet elevation, so proper mountain and density altitude planning is essential. Smiley Creek is a well maintained state airstrip and a favorite destination for pilots from across the country. Arrive early in the day for the best conditions and be prepared for changing mountain weather.
