Description: Mineral Canyon's airstrip resides in the Green River canyon just south of the Bowknot Bend. Mineral Canyon is one of the three back country airstrips included in the State's "FLY UTAH Passport Program". To learn more, head to their website.
Runway: 2000 ft long x 40 ft wide dirt runway in good condition.
Approach Considerations: Airstrip resides inside a canyon with rapidly rising terrain within 1000 feet of the airstrip rising over 1000 feet above the landing surface.
Decided to take Eagle, CO based Alpine Aviation's two day Utah Back Country Flying Course. Thank you Joe for a great flying experience. Runway was in good condition. The very south end of the runway is covered in tall weeds with soft dirt.
Runway is dry and firm with only shallow car tire ruts from the northwest end through the road entrance. Southeast of the road entrance the runway is softer with deeper ruts and at least one pretty deep hole. Camping would be unpleasant. No shade and the river banks are choked with tamarisk. River is currently running high so there's no beach.
Southernmost part of runway looks deceptively good. There are a couple of areas where the runway has been undermined and collapsed. Could cause some damage to a nose gear. Northern 3/4 of the runway is in great shape. Runway is dry everywhere, but it is obvious that both it and especially the parking area on the east about midfield has been recently very wet.
