Description: In the heart of the Utah Backcountry, Simplot offers stunning views of Happy Canyon, the Henry mountains, the Abajo Mountains, and the Maze District of Canyonlands NP. Simplot would be an excellent base camp for the surrounding airstrips with less risk of unexpected canyon winds ruining your evening return. The Poison Springs trail system that was recently reopened for overland use intersects the runway towards the north end. A quick hike in either direction on the trail will offer even more views of the surrounding canyons. The camping area towards the north is clearly seeing some use with this new trail. Plenty of flat ground and shade make this an attractive spot.

Runway:  Very recently worked with grader. This is good and bad. It’s certainly open to any high wing nose wheel airplane. The bad news it will be prone to washouts and if wet will be extremely hazardous. At this point it is totally UNUSABLE FOR ANY LOW WING AIRCRAFT due to the high berms. The usable width is about 30ft and at the highest the berms are nearly 4ft tall. (Inside of a cub wingspan). The humps that used to be present are still there, just less pronounced. In general the runway is concave, but still is more uphill landing north. The ground is soft in places but should be ok for any larger off-pavement tires. Please use caution as Simplot looks extremely inviting flying overhead, but it is still a backcountry strip with teeth.

Approach Considerations: No obstructions or technical considerations for Simplot in either direction. The north end of the strip terminates in a bluff that can create mechanical turbulence or downdrafts in windy conditions.  Landing north is slightly uphill, but landings and takeoffs can be accomplished in either direction. Be sure to scan for wildlife on your landing survey as deer seem to make regular crossings.

Parking: Parking for several aircraft around the camping area. The ground is mostly flat here with some shade. Not as high as some airstrips, but still will be cooler than the canyons on a hot day. No cell phone coverage.

Getting use. Still rough from vegetation. Great spot.

Full length of runway now available. Will need a little traffic to soften the erosion around vegetation. For now would recommend only high float tires.

Runway seeing some action. Camping area in fantastic shape. Seeing some overland use as well. Runway is pretty rough from vegetation and shouldn’t be landed with small tires.

Just did a touch and go, looks like some Jeep activity driving on the strip. The north part is the best, very bumpy starting about mid-field on down towards the south.
